High refund outgo slows direct tax mop-up to 3.7%

Tax authorities will have an uphill task in reaching their budgeted target of Rs 3,75,000 crore as direct tax collections in the first half of 2009-10 have managed to scrape up to just 40.7% of that. It is even lower at 38.15% of the full fiscal target for the escalated target of Rs 4 lakh crore. Net direct tax collections between April-September 2009 grew a mere 3.69% to Rs 1,52,625 crore, as per official figures released on Tuesday. A year ago, they stood at Rs 1,47,197 crore.
